God Said, “Don’t Look Back”

Good Morning and Happy Labor Day. I pray everyone’s having a safe and blessed three day weekend so far. This morning I am going to start my blog with a short Bible story that I am sure everyone’s familiar with. Which was also the discussion in my Sunday School class.

The story is about Lot and his family and the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, in which they lived. These two cities were so full of all kinds of sin. God decided to destroy them and every living thing in them. Abraham’s nephew Lot, his wife, two daughters and sons-in-laws also lived in Sodom. So, to make a long story short. God sent two angels to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. But first the two angels had to get Lot and his family out of the city.

Because God spared their lives due to Abraham’s prayers for his nephew Lot. They were instructed to leave but they hesitated. Then the two angels grabbed the hands of Lot, his wife and two daughters and led them out of the city. They were told to flee for their lives and not to look back and not to stop anywhere in the plains, to flee to the mountains.

So, Lot told the two angels he could not flee to the mountains because the disaster would overtake him and he would die. He requested to flee to a town called Zoar. The angels granted his request and told him to go quickly. Because they could not destroy the cities until they reached Zoar. When Lot and his family reached Zoar, the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. Then Lot’s wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. You can read the entire story in Genesis 19.

We were discussing in Sunday School why Lot’s wife looked back after she was instructed not to. She was looking back at the life style she was used to. 1 John 2:15 explains it this way, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” The Sunday School book reads, “It is not possible to be in love with God and the world at the same time. Love for the world leads to death and separation from God. Love for God alone leads to eternal life in His presence.”

This is what happens to us when we focus on the material things of this world instead of the spiritual things of God. We are headed for destruction. Remember, we are in the world but we are not of the world. John 17:14-16 reads, “I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.”

So, which will you choose? Will you look back and choose the world or will you be obedient and choose God? I chose God! Have a Blessed and God filled day. God Bless 🙂
